NEUROFEEDBACK

At CARE-LA, we offer neurofeedback therapy in West Los Angeles for children, adolescents, and adults as part of our comprehensive, evidence-based approach to mental health treatment. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive form of brain training that helps individuals improve self-regulation by providing real-time feedback about their brainwave activity. Through repeated training sessions, the brain learns to develop healthier patterns of functioning that may support attention, emotional regulation, stress management, sleep, and overall cognitive performance.

Neurofeedback is often incorporated into individualized treatment plans for individuals experiencing anxiety, ADHD, trauma-related symptoms, emotional dysregulation, sleep difficulties, and other conditions that affect daily functioning. At CARE-LA, every neurofeedback program begins with a comprehensive assessment to better understand each client's unique symptoms, goals, and brainwave patterns. Using this information, our Neurofeedback Specialist develops a personalized training protocol designed to support each individual's specific needs.

During a neurofeedback session, small sensors are gently placed on the scalp to measure naturally occurring brainwave activity. These sensors only record brain activity—they do not deliver electricity or send anything into the brain. While watching images or videos and listening to sounds through headphones, the brain receives immediate visual and auditory feedback based on its activity. This positive reinforcement encourages the brain to gradually develop more efficient patterns of functioning over time.

Neurofeedback is similar to physical exercise for the brain. Just as muscles become stronger through repeated training, the brain can strengthen healthy patterns of activity through consistent practice. Many individuals begin noticing improvements after a series of sessions, although the number of sessions varies depending on the individual's goals, symptoms, and treatment plan.

At CARE-LA, neurofeedback is frequently integrated with psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), psychiatry, mindfulness-based interventions, and other evidence-based treatments. By combining neurofeedback with traditional mental health care, we provide a comprehensive, personalized approach that addresses both neurological functioning and emotional well-being.

FAQs: Neurofeedback Therapy for Children, Adolescents & Adults at CARE-LA

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive form of brain training that uses real-time feedback to help the brain learn healthier patterns of activity. By monitoring brainwaves and providing immediate visual or auditory feedback, neurofeedback encourages improved self-regulation, attention, and emotional functioning.

How does neurofeedback work?

Small sensors placed on the scalp measure naturally occurring brainwave activity. The information is displayed through visual and auditory feedback while the client relaxes and watches a screen. Over time, the brain learns to reinforce more efficient patterns of activity through this feedback process.

Does neurofeedback send electricity into the brain?

No. Neurofeedback is completely non-invasive. The sensors only record brainwave activity—they do not stimulate the brain or deliver electrical current.

What conditions can neurofeedback help with?

Neurofeedback may be incorporated into treatment plans for individuals experiencing attention difficulties, ADHD, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, emotional regulation challenges, sleep disturbances, headaches, migraines, concussion recovery, executive functioning difficulties, and other conditions affecting brain regulation. Whether neurofeedback is appropriate depends on each individual's clinical presentation and treatment goals.

Is neurofeedback effective for anxiety?

Many individuals with anxiety use neurofeedback as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. By improving the brain's ability to regulate stress responses and emotional functioning, neurofeedback may complement evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).

Can children receive neurofeedback?

Yes. CARE-LA provides neurofeedback for children, adolescents, and adults. Treatment protocols are individualized based on the client's age, developmental level, symptoms, and therapeutic goals.

What happens during a neurofeedback session?

Clients relax in a comfortable chair while sensors are placed on the scalp to monitor brainwave activity. They watch images or videos and listen to sounds that respond to their brain activity in real time. The session is painless, non-invasive, and individualized to the client's treatment plan.

How many neurofeedback sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on each individual's goals, symptoms, and response to training. During your initial assessment, your provider will discuss recommendations based on your specific needs and monitor progress throughout treatment.

Is neurofeedback a replacement for therapy or medication?

No. Neurofeedback is best viewed as a complementary treatment. At CARE-LA, it is often integrated with psychotherapy, psychiatry, and other evidence-based interventions to provide comprehensive care tailored to each client.

What makes CARE-LA's neurofeedback program unique?

CARE-LA combines neurofeedback with a multidisciplinary mental health team specializing in anxiety and anxiety-related disorders. Rather than offering neurofeedback in isolation, we incorporate it into individualized treatment plans that may also include therapy, psychiatry, parent support, executive functioning services, and other complementary treatments, providing coordinated care that addresses the whole person.

Who provides neurofeedback at CARE-LA?

Neurofeedback services are provided by Angela Smith, CARE-LA's Neurofeedback Specialist, who collaborates closely with our clinical team to develop individualized training protocols and support each client's treatment goals.
