PARENT TRAINING & SUPPORT

At CARE-LA, we believe that parents play one of the most important roles in helping children and adolescents overcome anxiety and build lifelong resilience. Our Parent Training & Support services provide practical, evidence-based guidance to help parents better understand anxiety, respond effectively to challenging behaviors, and reinforce the skills their child is learning in therapy. Rather than simply managing symptoms, we empower parents with strategies that promote independence, confidence, emotional regulation, and healthy coping both at home and in everyday life. Parent training is individualized to each family's unique needs and may be integrated with individual therapy, psychiatry, student advocacy, school collaboration, executive function coaching, and other services offered at CARE-LA. By partnering with parents throughout the treatment process, we create a collaborative, comprehensive approach that helps children and adolescents make meaningful, lasting progress.

FAQs: Parent Training & Support at CARE-LA

What is parent training and support?

Parent Training & Support is a collaborative service that teaches parents practical, evidence-based strategies for helping their child manage anxiety, regulate emotions, develop coping skills, and become more independent. Parents learn how to respond to anxiety in ways that support long-term growth rather than unintentionally reinforcing fears.

Why is parent involvement important in anxiety treatment?

Parents have a significant influence on how children respond to anxiety. When parents learn effective strategies and consistently reinforce therapeutic skills at home, children often experience greater confidence, improved emotional regulation, and better long-term treatment outcomes.

What types of concerns can parent training help address?

Parent Training & Support can benefit families whose children are experiencing generalized anxiety, OCD, social anxiety, separation anxiety, school refusal, panic symptoms, perfectionism, emotional regulation difficulties, and other anxiety-related concerns.

Do parents attend every therapy session?

Not necessarily. Parent involvement varies based on the child's age, developmental level, treatment goals, and clinical needs. Some sessions may focus primarily on parent coaching, while others include the child, parents, or the entire family.

What will I learn during parent training?

Parents learn practical strategies for responding to anxiety, setting healthy boundaries, encouraging brave behavior, reducing reassurance and avoidance patterns, improving communication, managing challenging behaviors, and supporting emotional regulation at home.

Is parent training only for parents of young children?

No. Parent coaching can be beneficial for families with children of all ages, including adolescents. As children grow, the focus of parent support evolves to address age-appropriate developmental, emotional, academic, and social challenges.

Can Parent Training & Support help with school-related anxiety?

Yes. Parents receive guidance on supporting children who struggle with school refusal, test anxiety, social anxiety, perfectionism, or academic stress. When appropriate, CARE-LA may also collaborate with schools to promote consistency across home, school, and treatment.

Can parent training be combined with other CARE-LA services?

Absolutely. Parent Training & Support is often integrated with individual therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), psychiatry, student advocacy, executive function coaching, and other evidence-based services to provide coordinated care tailored to each family's needs.

What makes CARE-LA's Parent Training & Support different?

CARE-LA specializes in anxiety and anxiety-related disorders and provides parent coaching as part of a comprehensive treatment plan—not as a standalone service. Our clinicians tailor recommendations to each family's unique circumstances, ensuring that parents receive practical tools they can confidently use in everyday situations while working collaboratively with their child's therapist.
