NEUROFEEDBACK - FAQs

Neurofeedback therapy at CARE-LA is provided by our Neurofeedback specialist Angela Smith.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Neurofeedback:

Q: What is Neurofeedback, and how does it work?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive technique that uses visual and auditory feedback to help balance and regulate brain activity. This training is based on your Brainprint evaluation.

Neurofeedback works by providing the client moment to moment brain function using real-time fractal images of brain activity called brainwaves (with a little help from a few wires and a computer).

By allowing the brain to observe how it’s operating, the brain creates new neural pathways and stops actively firing the old pathways that don’t serve you. This helps improve overall functioning, including behavior, focus, and mood regulation.

Q: What is a Brainprint?

A Brainprint is just like your fingerprint but for the brain. During your first session you will have a computerized evaluation called a Brainprint. The information in this Brainprint determines which brainwaves should be trained. This is called a training protocol. Your training protocol is a set of brainwaves specific to only you and your training.

Q: What are some common areas where Neurofeedback can make a difference?

At CARE-LA, we primarily support children, teens, and young adults struggling with various issues. Neurofeedback has scientifically been proven to permanently treat many of the common issues we see like depression, social anxiety, ADD/ADHD, trauma, sleep, and disordered eating. We see benefits in managing fears, phobias, autism-related challenges, and stress. It reduces negative self talk and self judgement that can accompany social media.

I personally think Neurofeedback is especially helpful for talk-therapy averse clients because research shows that Neurofeedback places the individual in a more receptive state to new learning, increased self awareness and the ability to integrate therapy sessions.

Many families even use it to help with relationship dynamics, communication skills, and test anxiety.

Q: Is it true that Neurofeedback can help with enhancing performance, or is that a myth?

Great question! That is absolutely true. The concentration of flow and optimal brainwave states that allows an athlete, a surgeon, an astronaut or a musician to get into the Zone, i.e., to block out all distractions unrelated to performance has been assessed and measured by the Tellegen Absorption Scale and proclaimed Neurofeedback to be a profound performance enhancement tool for many years; for example, Tiger Woods said in an interview that Neurofeedback allows him to be “in the zone” and “optimally focused”.

Q: How can parents benefit from this treatment for their children?

Parents often feel helpless when their child is struggling, but Neurofeedback provides a structured, evidence-based way to help regulate the brain without medication (you can also use it in conjunction with medication).  It empowers children and teens to take ownership of their emotional and cognitive health.

Over time, this can reduce family stress, improve parent-child communication, and support a calmer home environment. Many parents also notice improvements in their child’s self-esteem and resilience.

Q: Is it just for kids, or can parents benefit, too?

Everyone can benefit!  While we primarily use it with young people, Neurofeedback can absolutely help parents as well. We work with adults experiencing stress, burnout, relationship struggles, or difficulty managing their own anxiety. When parents are regulated, it models healthy emotional regulation for the whole family.

Q: Any final thoughts you’d like to share?

Angela Smith: I always tell parents that Neurofeedback is like going to the gym for your brain. It takes consistency and commitment, but the results can be life-changing. I’m so proud to be part of the CARE-LA team. We support the entire family strengthening both brain and emotional wellness.
